WHAT YOU’LL DO:

Building Matters Ann Arbor is offering an interesting and engaging architecture tour in Fall 2019 and is looking for docents to lead and support the tours.  The Tour Docent is responsible for leading and supporting 90-minute walking tours. Candidates will be trained (paid) on the history, architectural knowledge, and storytelling skills needed to offer memorable experiences, outstanding customer service, and the opportunity to get further engaged with BMA2 for guests.  The goals are clearly defined, but every day will be different, and will require a blend of discipline and creativity to get the job done. 

WHAT THE JOB IS:

  • Part-time hourly

  • Flexible schedule

  • ADA accessible

  • Seasonal, with an opportunity for outstanding docents to continue on to the 2020 season

  • Pay starting at $17/hour based on relevant experience

EVERY DOCENT:

  • Is welcoming to guests of all ages and backgrounds.

  • Has excellent organizational skills.

  • Greets and checks in guests at the beginning of each tour.

  • Is proficient in delivering the tour in an engaging, factual, and entertaining manner. 

  • Takes responsibility for the general order and safety of the visitors along the predetermined tour route.

  • Has the flexibility to adapt to questions, requests, and changes to the tour script, route and assignment on short notice.

  • Sells on-site tickets and merchandise.

  • Is an enthusiastic ambassador for the Building Matters Ann Arbor mission and brand.

OUTSTANDING CANDIDATES WILL:

  • Have some experience in public speaking, making presentations, theatre, performing arts, communications, museum studies, or prior work as a tour guide or docent.

  • Possess excellent memorization and time management skills with the ability to articulate and inject energy and enthusiasm into presentation.

  • Be curious about using technology to augment good storytelling.
