Garden apartments, granny flats, carriage houses, backyard cottages, mother-in-law suites: accessory dwelling units, or ADUs, go by a lot of names. If your adult children need an affordable place to live, your active parents want a place to stay close to your family, or you could use some extra rental income, an ADU may be right for you. This session will emphasize the unique challenges and opportunities of Downtown and Historic District homes.
Ann Arbor homeowners now have the option to add ADUs to their property. You are invited to a community conversation about how ADUs can expand options for Downtown/Historic District homeowners while helping to expand local housing options. (You can read more here about ADUs as a top-10 local solution for addressing housing affordability and economic equity on page 40 of this report.)
Join moderator Jessica A.S. Letaw and ADU expert Holly Huntley for a conversation on ADU design, financing, construction, and income potential. Local mortgage lenders and City of Ann Arbor staff will also be present to answer detailed questions about financing, permitting, and what's possible on your home's lot. This session will emphasize the unique challenges and opportunities of homes in downtown and historic districts. Come with questions and ideas; leave with a plan!
